The Healthy Truth: 5 Ways to Get Your Protein

Based on readers' comments, I'm going to continue to write some healthy living posts every once in a while, and continue with my series "The Healthy Truth". It's not going to be consistent, but I want to give some insight into what I'm focusing on, and how to be healthy and still enjoy life!

Have you ever experienced the in-between meals grumble?! You get a snack, and another, and another, and you're STILL HUNGRY??! It happens to me all the time. Well, the reason why we aren't satisfied, is because our bodies need lots of protein. Multiply your body weight by .37 and that's how many grams of protein you need each day. I know I don't get my recommended amount every day, but here are a few ways I've been working more protein into my diet without eating meat 5 times a day.

1. Nuts
I love nuts! But sometime the texture gets to me if I eat them a lot. So, my favorite way to get some nuts into my diet?! NUT BUTTERS! The obvious one is peanut butter, but there's also almond butter and other butters full of protein! Just make sure you get the ones that have no added sugar. The more natural the better. My favorite snack to take along is a little tub of PB, and some carrot sticks. It's super delicious and you get protein and veggies in one! BONUS!

http://www.justins.com/
I just discovered Justin's and am OBSESSED with all of their butters! The Chocolate Hazelnut one is to DIE for too!

2. Greek Yogurt
I love Greek Yogurt, and have for a while. There are some very tasty options out there. You can get ones with the fruit on the bottom, blended, or in a separate pouch to add in. It really just depends on your preference. Also, if you aren't a huge fan of it, try mixing up a cup, and putting some in popsicle makers and into the freezer. Greek FroYo pops at your service! Also, if you want to go SUPER healthy, just get plain Greek Yogurt and add your own mix-ins! Honey, fruit, nuts, etc.!

3. Oatmeal
I love oatmeal for an easy meal or snack solution. One cup of prepared oatmeal has 6 grams of protein, so it's a great way to get some into your diet. If you are out and about, and need a quick food option, skip the nearest fast food joint, and go to Starbucks and order their classic oatmeal. It's only $2.75, and you can mix nuts, fruits, and brown sugar in! Cinnamon is another favorite to sprinkle on top of my oatmeal!

4. Beans
Beans are an awesome source of protein! But you may be wondering, how do I incorporate beans into my diet? Well, hummus is a great choice! It's made of garbanzo beans and is great with chips, crackers, and veggies! You can also use it as a spread on a sandwich! Another option, for those on the go, is a basic bean burrito. Maybe it isn't the CLEANEST choice, but it's something that will tide you over or get you through to the next meal. Taco Bell has bean burritos for just over a dollar, so there are no excuses!

5. Smoothies
Smoothies can be the ultimate healthy option! In my house, we blend together: spinach, banana and other fruits, carrots, other veggies, CHIA SEEDS, GREEK YOGURT, and anything else that may be in the fridge. They are completely customizable, and are great if you don't really like the flavor or texture of a particular thing, like Greek Yogurt, or spinach. We love to make a giant blender-full of smoothie in the morning, and have it to snack on all day. If you are needing extra protein, you can also add protein powder (in moderation).

There are SO many other ways to get your protein, but these five I find to be really accessible and easy! Not to mention, they all taste awesome too! So, which one are you trying next?!

Travel Tuesday: The Togolese Children

Hey there! Welcome to Travel Tuesday, where we link up posts discussing anything travel! Today, my post is very close to my heart. It's a continuation in my Togo missions trip series. You can read more about my adventure in Africa in these posts: Traveling Tips when Flying Overseas and Togo Ministry. Today's post will be all about the beautiful Togolese people!
New here?! Start with this post!
So, as you may have guessed from the title, this is a post all about the beautiful children I met during my time in Togo. We didn't stay in one spot long, but connections with these kiddos were instant. They loved the camera, and loved laughing and playing with us! As I mentioned in my ministry post, we did a lot of teacher seminars, where the first day we would teach the teachers, and the next day, we'd show them what our method looks like by holding a children's service. We also got to hang out with some of the kids, which was so much fun too! All of these pictures were taken by myself or a member of our missions team.
Look at those faces! They are precious!

I get teary-eyed looking through these pictures, because of how much my heart is for children like these!

This was when we did one of the teacher seminars. Some of the kids sneaked in on the side of the church to watch!

 LOVE

They loved the cameras, and being able to see themselves in them!

This was a kids choir of the church we were in! Also, notice all the fun banners! We saw these kinds of decorations in several of the churches we went to!

"Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."" Matthew 19:14

This is what I desired for this trip; to get a picture of me surrounded by all these beautiful children! It was such a blessing to be able to meet them and get to know them a little bit. I'm so grateful that God has put a heart for missions inside of me, and I can't wait to see how that will be walked out in the future!

Sunday Soc...

It's been a little while since I've done a Sunday Social post, and this week's questions seemed fun, so why not?! Let's just get into it!

1. What is your favorite breakfast food? This is hard, because breakfast is awesome! I love omelets with lots of veggies, and my mom makes this amazing coffee cake for special breakfast occasions (like Christmas and New Year's) that is delicious too! And coffee is a must!

2. Best way to spend a free day? shopping, coffee, mani/pedi, reading by the fire, blogging, and a spa night in!

3. Airline ticket to anywhere in the world...where would you go and why? PARIS. I've been wanting to go there since I was little, and it's at the top of my travel list! Eiffel Tower, bakeries with macarons and espresso, shopping, and vintage-everything. What more can a girl ask for?!

 4. If you can only leave the house with one thing, what would it be? My purse...because everything I need is in it! LOL. But  if it was just one item, it'd be my iPhone.

5. How do you take your coffee? with cream and sugar

Bloggers/Shop Owners Wanted!

Hello everyone! I hope you're having a great week! Today I'm looking for some awesome bloggers who may also be online shop owners to collaborate with! So if that sounds interesting to you, keep reading!

As I mentioned earlier this month, I re-started selling in my Etsy shop, The Allieway. I sell chocolate-covered pretzel rods that are sprinkled with tasty things or made to look like a bride and groom! Here's a mini-version of my shop right now:
I'm still trying to build my shop, and tweak some things, as well as build my customer base. And that's where you come in! I want to send a few bloggers samples of the items in my shop for their review and collaboration with me on their blog! Now, it would be even more cool if you were also a shop owner, because we could exchange products, collaborate, and post reviews on our blogs for each other's products! Either way, I'm looking to collaborate with 3-5 bloggers who I can send a sampling of all of my Dipstix to, and they will review and promote my shop on their blog. I will also give you a coupon code for your readers to use!

To review, I will send you a sampling of my four Dipstix listed in my shop. You then experience and enjoy them, and write a review on your blog with a coupon code!

Even better, if you are also a shop owner, we do a little product swap, and review each other's products on our blogs!

Interested? Email me at allieelliott @ yahoo.com (without the spaces) or comment below with your email address. Make sure to send me a link of your blog when you email me or comment, so I can see if we are a good fit!

Just so you know, I use almond bark, pretzel rods, coconut, toffee, and more in my creations. If you are allergic to any of these, this collaboration may not be for you.

I love collaborating with other bloggers, so if you have any other grand ideas, be sure you let me know in your email/comment! Thanks friends! I hope to hear from you soon!

SPREAD THE LOVE (#TGTSpreadTheLove)

Happy Valentine's Day! The day of love is here! And no matter if you're single, married, or somewhere in between, today is all about showing love! It is definitely not completely about a special date, or roses, or romance, although those are part. But, to me, Valentine's Day is a day dedicated to spreading the love to anyone and everyone! My goal this Valentine's Day is to spread love to those around me! Here are some ways that you can spread the love!

Write a Note!
How often, these days, do we get a handwritten note, "just because"?! I love getting little "love notes", but love writing them even more! You can write them to specific people in your life, or just a quick little message of love to pass out to strangers passing by! I love getting out all of my special pens and markers, and going to town! Writing the love notes not only makes the recipients feel special, they cheer me up too! Here are a few examples to get you started.

Make Something!
Homemade-anything comes straight from the heart! It could be a dozen cookies, a piece of art, a meal, or a craft. Anything that you make yourself will mean so much to the person you're giving it to! I made a batch of Valentine's Heart Cookies to take to my coworkers and it made their day! Something so easy can have such an impact! Scour Pinterest for some great ideas, but here's a couple of my favorites!

Be Random!
They call them Random Acts of Kindness for a reason! Order a bunch of balloons and hand them out to strangers at a mall. Buy roses on clearance to give to those women without a "Valentine" after Valentine's Day. "Pay it forward" by buying the person behind you's Starbucks. Leave a message out of Conversation Hearts on a friend's desk. Basically, make someone's day!

The person in my life whom I most look up to on the subject of spreading the love is my mom. She will go out of the way to bless someone, whether it's stopping by Burger King to buy a gift card for the homeless man on the street, or paying for someone's groceries, praying for someone on the spot, etc. I strive to become someone who is constantly thinking about spreading the love, and acting on it.

No matter what your plans are this Valentine's Day, I hope you spread the love to someone today! If you do, instagram or tweet it to me, and use the hashtag: #TGTSpreadTheLove (TGT standing for "The Gypsy Teacher") and tag me: @allieelliott. I may just post your RAK on here, or my social media! So, what are you going to do to spread the love today?!?!
